Fear of Muzak is a good representation of Talking Heads' 1979 Fear of Music tour. Recorded live in Boston, the band performs faithful renditions of compositions from Fear of Music, a couple from More Songs from Buildings and Food, and a slightly altered "The Book I Read" from Talking Heads: 77. The performance is solid and consistent. The songs are short and precise, and Byrne's voice is strong. The sound quality is decent considering the album's bootleg status. With good dynamics and full-bodied sound, the recording captures each instrument's clarity with equal balance. Weymouth's bass even sounds pronounced on "Mind," a highlight. Fear of Muzak doesn't yield any surprises or rare material, or even any "hits" (except for the semi-popular "Heaven"), but for completists it's definitely worth finding. A humorous photo of Ronald Reagan graces the back cover, with a blurry black and white portrait of the band on the front.
