One of my favorite songs by the Talking Heads is "Seen and Not Seen" off of their more-than-essential album Remain in Light. If you know the album at all, that might seem strange to you. After all, out of all the songs on the album, this is the least song-ish one on it. It has lyrics, but no singing. It has structure and rhythm, but does not follow the traditional song format. Without a doubt, it's the simplest song on the album--nothing more than a basic groove laid ... MORE
Note: the following is the first of what may be a new series of posts, depending on how much I feel like continuing, wherein I chronicle how my life in some way relates to the various lyrics laid down by David Byrne in his various incarnations. I don't want to brag, but I consider myself a pretty educated guy. And yet for some reason I can not, for the life of me, figure out the burners on our stove. I swear, about once a week (and I do a lot of the cooking at the house... MORE
HELP! I need some help with a mixtape. I'm looking for songs about nature or the environment. Lovesongs to Mother Earth, rants about its destruction, sarcastic asides that are still catchy lil ditties. Anything the MOG-verse can come up with, I'd like to hear them. Thanks in advance good citizens of MOG-itopia. P.S. - The only ones I can think of so far are Tegan & Sara's "Our Trees" and The Talking Heads' "Nothing But Flowers". There's a Neil Young song I've heard b... MORE

The Talking Heads were my first introduction to Alternative/College Radio music. We were living in Laredo, Texas at the time and we had a friend of ours Juan from Detroit come and visit us. He brought all of this cool and strange new music that mis hermanos and I never heard of before. We were living in a Texas border town where Top 40 and Tejano were king. One of bands that I instantly fell for was The Talking Heads. Years, later after we moved up to San Antonio, I final... MORE
In honor of Oatmeal's new arrival, and with burgeoning expectations on my own end (no, not another kid for the Groonster, but my sister is expecting her first in November. This was a hard-fought pregnancy, believe me) I figured I'd issue another installment of my random Talking Heads in Real Life series. This one is about babies. The 1985 album Little Creatures saw the Heads move away from the more tribal, ethnic-laced songs of the past three albums and em... MORE
