Blog post image preview I'm so tired, I couldn't really think of a witty title for this post. Basically all I want to say is that Sufjan Stevens is brilliant, he has a very distinctive sound and makes use of many differnent instuments to give his music a wonderful diverse flavor. His lyrics are also pretty cool and the references he makes are pretty sweet. Like John Wyane Gacy, Jr. Indie Follk Rules!

Chicago is amazing (as are the other versions on Avalanche). And there are some other really good songs and it holds together extremely well as a concept album. But my favorite song and the reason I bought the album initially was for this song. It evokes such a strong mood - interesting and dark, kind of scary and holy at once. When I write creatively it's one of the songs I used to help me get into that place.

Free music video of Chicago (4)
So I just moved to Chico, California with the thought that it's about time to start school again and get on with my education. It's been surprisingly quiet here, which I'm more than thankful for. I'm glad Chico has not yet lived up to it's reputation of being a huge party town (not that I don't like to party). It's been two and a half months since I've showed up and am now starving to start a new band. I've spent the last 5 years of my life in a bands, so the lack of col... MORE

i'm in texas (right now) and from texas (many a year ago) and leaving texas, tomorrow. and this, too, is from texas. i collect live sufjan, and while i often have to search hard to find great recordings, this one came right to my tivo. and to yours, if you're an austin city limits enthusiast. the chimes at the beginning cause tiny hairline fractures that split deep & wide as the song rumbles forth.

life can be....messy things get complicated, things just get messy. and it appears even fate is spiteful so here i sit, contemplating the great mystery of life and the messiness within. i'll be the first to admit i've made a lot of mistakes in this messy adventure that is life, but i won't trade any of them, and i wouldn't change anything. i happen to like the mess

Blog post image preview I was listening to Sufjan Stevens' Illinois, and felt compelled to pull up his Wikipedia entry. It turns out that Sufjan was named by a gent named Bapak, who was the leader of Subud, a spiritual organization that his parents belonged to. I found it astonishing that I had never heard of Subud. The description of the practice seems open, non-invasive, and somewhat interesting. Are there any out there who have had experiences with it? I haven't heard Sufjan's Michigan rel... MORE

Nothing Like The Purgartory Of a three hour airport wait in Calgary

Artist:
Album:

Well, the Self Righteous Records tour ended, for me anyway. Called back home for a family emergency. I sat in the Airport looking out at the Calgary city skyline like a small cardboard cutout. It was a strange time coming down from being with such great people (them being Amy Honey, The Lonesome Valley Singers & Meatdraw). I think this song sort of sums up a lot of the odd emotion of agony and excitement that followed the tour. Oddly, I didn't much like this song when I fi... MORE

Blog post image preview Overrated? OK, someone please help me out here. I hear about Sufjan Stevens all the time .... people talk about him like he's some genius or something. So, FINALLY, I bought some of his music. I got "Illinoise" and "Songs for Christmas" (tis the season) which, since there are so many tracks on his albums, apparently makes him 3rd in my "Digital Music Collection" in terms of number of tracks. Anyway, I listened to some (not all) of both albums. It's decent, but not ... MORE

Blog post image preview yes. i know. totally melodramatic. but if you only knew what a nightmarish wreck of a life i've been living for the past three, almost four months, i think you'd understand. now i totally admit it. i cry. a lot. it helps me let my emotions out. but recently, i've just been burying all that emotion beneath papers, projects, chores, and general busywork. i've tried to forget about those emotions because they were bigger, scarier, and like nothing i've ever dealt with bef...
