AMG Review of Gathering at the Earl of Old Town
Thom Owens
All Music GuideSteve Goodman's first album, Gathering at the Earol of Old Town, was recorded live at the popular Chicago folk venue. The record has the feeling of a hootenanny, with a number of different artists -- including Jim Post, Ed Holstein, Fred Holstein, Ginni Clemens and Aliotta Haynes & Jeremiah -- stopping in to play on the record. While it's a little rough around the edges, the album is utterly charming, featuring the first versions of such seminal Goodman songs as "City of New Orleans" and "Eight Ball," as well as "Chicago Bust Rag," which the singer-songwriter never performed again.
