Somehow I have hung on to this Jicks album for months without really jamming it... Well now that I have given it a chance, I am really digging it. Stehepen Malkmus is a badass, and let's it show here with some serious rocking out... check out the title track to his latest effort "Real Emotional Trash." Incidentally, if you went out to record store day you may or may not have noticed he released an exclusive 10" for the event. I picked up 2 copies which I haven't listened... MORE
This is very cool, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks live at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 2, 2008 performing "Hopscotch Willie" off their latest album. Apparently, this was shot with a $240 Cannon SD1000 digital still camera. The audio is pretty great, considering!
Stephen Malkmus and his non-pavement friends take 10 minutes to peruse the current tide of slow-burnin' indie rock before blowing the lid off at around the 6 minute mark just to remind you that he was, you know, part of the best indie-band on all time.
This is debatably my favorite song off his new record. Song wasn't meant to be so "instrumental" at the beginning, but with the addition of Sleater-Kinney's drummer it turned into what it is.
Six out of ten stars You can’t go back. No one can take you there. Not Black Francis. Not Jeff Magnum. Not Dave Grohl. Not Stephen Malkmus. No, the past is never twice experienced. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks have a new album coming March 8, 2008. It's called Real Emotional Trash. Here's a track off it called "Baltimore."
Checking out Aquarium Drunkard today, after a beautiful weekend, and he's got a couple of great live Malkmus tracks recorded a couple of months ago.
Over at AD, you'll find nine new tracks, performed live by Mr Malkmus and the Jicks. You'll find the recordings to be of fantastic quality and the band to be in fine, fine form. Case in point: Dragonfly Pie:
Impenetrable lyrics, or am I not listening closely enough? Doesn't really matter anyway when the song is this good.
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks; Entrance(Harlow's, Sacramento CA, 1/14/07)
Here's the setup. I'm being well entertained by Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks at Harlow's earlier tonight. In fact it's better and more enjoyable than I expected. Somehow I get precious little out of his solo albums when listening to them at home. They seem gimmicky to me like some of the Pavement material did. But I have to say that the material really opens up live. Plus drumming has some real heft beca... MORE
