IMHO one of my favorite bands ever, Steely Dan, lost the plot near the end of their first recording career. 1977-80 saw the releases Aja and Gaucho, both of which sold very, very well. But both of them lacked the blistering guitar and sardonic lyrics that adorn the best Dan tracks from earlier days. Perfectly produced? Stellar playing? Yup. Boring and unengaging? A girl talking to her friend about a third one – a tinge of twinging jealousy in her voice:

today i went to a record shop in down town whitter, i went in thinking maybe i would get lucky and find something good and sure enough i found a used dvd of of the police,the title is called "everyone stares, the police inside out" its beyond awesome,,stewart copeland directed it,its basicly about how they got started and shows some of there first concerts and tours,its almost as good as the the police synchronicity concert dvd i got from tower records befor they closed do...
