A decade after Pavement's last album -- and directly in the wake of their announced 2010 reunion -- Scott Kannberg finally releases his first album under his Spiral Stairs' moniker with Real Feel. Not too far removed from either Preston School of Industry album, Real Feel slightly emphasizes a California pop vibe, using these vague Beach Boys aspirations and Kannberg's patented, rippling indie pop as punctuation to a bunch of pleasantly lazy, ambling country-rock. Spiral Stairs remains a pleasing singer/songwriter and Real Feel rambles on nicely.
As one of the main contributors to Pavement in the 90’s, then Preston School of Industry for the last decade, Scott Kannberg is now the man and main contributor behind Spiral Stairs. This album still features the members of Preston but the sound here is very much his own as opposed to the bands’. This…
Scott Kannberg's solo debut is aesthetically assured but ultimately a little empty.A rich heritage is not something to be totally discounted when considering the first solo outing of someone so closely associated with a notable musical group from the past. Indeed, in this case, it's become inextricable from him. Scott Kannberg’s (AKA Spiral Stairs) role in Pavement will likely shape the opinion.

So, the word today is that Scott Kannberg is releasing his first solo album under his Spiral Stairs moniker. You may remember him from his days as the front man of Preston School of Industry, whose Monsoon is an underrated honey of an indie-rock record from a few years back. Plus he wrote this great tune a long long time ago. The Real Feel doesn’t hit the ground until October 20, but Matador ha.
Having had the release of his first solo album The Real Feel eclipsed by that of the forthcoming Pavement reunion and scramble to get tickets, Spiral Stairs would probably be feeling a little robbed, but then again come next year, as the reunion-cash floods in, whatsitgonnamatter? I might just have found my new favorite album of the year, and it’s fused with the correct dose of emotion. A retro shuffle of slow-paced jams, twangy heartbreak and rockin’ blues, this solo effort by former Pavement guitarist/vocalist Scott Kannberg proves he can do just fine on his own. Reminds us of: Pavement | Yo La Tengo | the remedy to a break-upSpiral Stairs: (Myspace)spiral stairs the

Musician Rule #547: If you have a cool nickname, you need to release a solo album to show it off. This is precisely what Pavement co-founder Spiral Stairs (a.k.a. Scott Kannberg) has decided to do. Although he has released albums under the name Preston School of Industry, Kannberg is striking out on his own this time around with his first solo album, The Real Feel, due October 20 from Matador. ...
After the demise of Pavement and the closure of the Preston School of Industry, Scott Kannberg AKA Spiral Stairs returns after a 5 year absence to deliver his first proper solo album The Real Feel on October 19.

With all of the hoopla over the now confirmed 2010 Pavement reunion shows, the release of Spiral Stairs' debut solo album has been quite overshadowed. Stairs, aka Scott Kannberg, has put out material post-Pavement with Preston School of Industry, but The Real Feel (out October 20th) is his first under his ahem, own name.Of course the first comparisons one is tempted to make are to the solo
