AMG Review of The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake
Jonathan Lewis
All Music GuideSpiderbait had been around for a few years before The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake finally brought them to the attention of the public. The album consisted of short (most songs are under three minutes) blasts of punk-pop. With their buzzing guitars and the strange vocals of lead singer Kram, Spiderbait were a kind of hybrid of the rawer moments of the Pixies and the Muffs, but less melodic than either of those two. While the singles "Monty" and "Sam Gribbles" saw Spanish Galleon gain a certain amount of attention, the album as a whole is neither original enough nor memorable enough to make a lasting impact.
