The have been a number of artists over the past few years who have played an album in its entirety live, but Sparks have a gone a little bit further.... The Sparks Spectacular will be taking place in London from May 16th through to June 13th with one album per night being played, starting with 1971's album 'Halfnelson'. The only concession made to man's physicality is that, whilst the order of the albums will be chronological, there will be some days off during the run! ... MORE

When you think about it, song lyrics are pretty much extensions of the human drive to tell stories – an inclination that goes back millennia, all the way to prehistoric man spinning yarns for the rest of the clan around the fire. But narrative songs aren’t so prevalent these days, when proclamations of love, statements of purpose, surreal ruminations, and random gibberish are the usual fare. Sure, we’ve had “A Boy Named Sue,” “She’s Leaving Home,” “Hurricane,” “Cat’s in ... MORE

From their first outing in 1972, this was before Todd Rundgren's influence was forged in indelible ink. Still, a milestone that set the stage for much, much more Mael bros. For my good budy dermahrk!!

[Sparks - Thank God It's Not Christmas - 5:09 (1974)]
Feasts and holidays have always been a bore to me. Why should one be merry and celebrate on such and such dates and why not on others?
The carols, the crackers, the shopping, the shipping. The over-indulgence. All this is such a pain to me. If you'll excuse me, I'd rather go to Lapland and build myself a hut and hibernate while this racket goes on.
Let's see them.... MORE

The brothers Mael, Ron and Russell, otherwise known as Sparks have been around and recording for almost 40 years. Mind Blowing. They started out back in 1969 as _"Halfnelson"_ playing the clubs around their home in L.A. While attending UCLA in 1970 they changed their name to Sparks (which was somehow a tribute to the Marx Brothers). At first they were something of a glam band. Scoring a couple of minor hits from their first two albums was enough to send them on a tour of En... MORE

A song I heard on MTV for a show "The Real World, Denver" I liked it, so I searched for it. I like it a lot actually, but I think by far after listening to other songs by Sparks, Perfume is definitely the best of them all.

Thus spoke my Dad.He was only looking after me.I'd been into music for a couple of years, was learning the guitar and wanted to see what rock n' roll was really like.Me and my mates had seen Sparks on TOTP ,found out they were on in Manchester and when I asked my Dad for £1.50 for the ticket (it was 1974),he started going on that he'd seen Duke Ellington at the same venue in the 50's for 2/6d (12.5p) and that £1.50 was a ridiculous price to pay to see a load of pillocks pranc... Sparks debut album has to be one of my favorite records to play. It is just so damn great. I really can't get enough of it. I have to give many props to Todd Rundgren for producing such great sounds as well. I am keeping this post short, so I guess i will end it by saying I did not really feel their last album which was released earlier this year I believe...but hey, anyone who keeps releasing albums for 30 years is a hero in my book.... Having got my hands on a copy of Sparks new album I've spent most of the evening listening to Hello Young Lovers, (although Mog-o-matic won't admit it!!!), and have really enjoyed it, Sparks as usual managed to bring a smile to my face, think my fav track has to be Metaphor, with it's ideals of attracting ladies with your skill of language, but the Dick Around is and equally good tune with it's anthemic feel.... Continuing to confess my obsessions, predating my one with Pere Ubu, and still continuing to this day, is my one with Sparks. And unlike with Thomas, I've never fallen out with the brothers Mael. I think maybe that's because they have a sense of humour. At least I hope so.
I first heard the Sparks single "This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us" on the BBC Radio Top 20 Chart Show one Sunday evening in 1974 in my Dad's car on our way back from fishing the River Derwen... MORE

Sparks’ new single ‘Dick Around’ has been banned by the BBC , much to the annoyance of the band. The seminal group only found out the news when Ron and Russell Mael guested on Jono Coleman’s Breakfast Show London 94.9FM this morning. After the interview, the Beeb refused to let Jono play the song – embarrassing both the host and band. Ron Mael blasted: “The BBC has officially killed off our new single ‘Dick Around’, ostensibly through rather childish objecti... MORE

I like to keep a detailed list of what I have been listening to from year to year, broken down into each month. Thus the monthly mix was born. I am a rather large fan of making mixtapes/mix CDs for my close friends of these monthly aural excusrsions. Here's my latest mix for my friend Leslie, sequenced as if it were the radio station in my brain (complete with jingles).... 1. "Promotional Jingle #17"- Paul and Linda McCartney (taken from the "Brung to Ewe By" Promotional... MORE

When I was a kid, I usually wasn't allowed to stay up too late. But every now and then I'd have an exception or slumber party or something. One of these times, when I must have been about 8 or 9, a friend and I stayed up to watch Saturday Night Live. I doubt we got many of the jokes, and I guess that was also during the "bad" years. But hey, we were up past our bedtimes and that alone was fun. The musical guest that night was the strangest thing I'd ever seen. I don'... MORE
