Wow… I don’t even know where to begin for this one.  A best friend & brother of the highest order is my Tallpo.  We’ve been friends since meeting through a mutual friend our sophomore year in college.  They dated for a while & when things went south for them – he & I still kept in fairly close contact, visiting each other while the ex fell further & further off our radar.    Pretty soon we were attending shows together, making mixes, smoking, drinking & winning nearly e... A Weird Kind Of Romantic

"Janine" by Soul Coughing is, for my money, as good a love song as there is. You'll probably disagree. I won't care because I'm a self-centered ass. I love Soul Coughing quite a bit, have fond memories of being snuck in to see them when I was far too young to have been there, and always come back to this as the track of theirs that I enjoy the most as a song, as opposed to just being incredibly pleasant noise.   It definitely isn't the sort of thing that many people woul... Manhattan Daze & Brooklynites

Artist:
Album: Blue In The Face

Blog post image preview We found ourselves back in Brooklyn yesterday for the birthday party of one of Charlotte's little classmates. Despite being a dyed-in-the-wool Manhattan snob, I have started to warm to Brooklyn of late, although I'm about a decade and a half behind everyone else, it seems. My old attitude was that as nice as it inarguably was -- it was still only Brooklyn. Nice, right? That all said, I'm as familiar with Brooklyn's byways as I am with say -- Shanghai's (read: not very). I ... MORE

I love it when a long lost song from your past finds your via the shuffle. I don't think I have listened to this song since the first X Files movie came out, years and YEARS ago...such a shame, a great song.

Funky Friday- Freaky Caucasians on the Loose

It may not be funky, who's to say? But the groove this song puts forth is undeniable.

The Screenwriter's Blues

(63)
I was driving around looking at apartments in West Hollywood today and this song came on about the same time that my eyes met a GIGANTIC advertisement on a wall for Rush Hour 3. And it hit me that all of the talented, creative, UNEMPLOYED screenwriters in this town must die a little inside every time a pre-packaged, formulaic movie like that makes millions. And they always make millions. I don't think I would last a day in the film business...not a day.

Driving Late At Night

Free music video of Screenwriter's Blues (6)
Driving is one of my favourite things to do. I put up up there as the fourth element fo the triumvirate of Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll. There are a lot of songs that are great driving songs... depending upon the time of day and my state of mind, but the song that always makes me think of a long road trip where I have been up all night, just me and the road, is Screenwriter's Blues by Soul Coughing. Imagine my delight to find that a video for it has finally been posted o... MORE

What's this I hear about the remaining members sans Doughty forming a coup er BAND called the Tempo Team? (recently signed to Olympus Mons Records) Granted the solo efforts have been dissappointing, definitely somethin missing. Interesting nonetheless...

The Best Music

(27)
The best music, to me, elicits emotion. How? Sometimes directly with the lyrics, sometimes with the groove, and when it's best, the emotion comes from an overall mood. Maybe it reminds you of the 70's, or maybe it just feels like home, but there's a connection and you feel it deep down. Helps if your toe is tapping too.
Lazybones does it all for me. And the imagery is really special. There's an interview with the guy who wrote it (M. Doughty) where he says that the so... MORE

I don't have a lot of time so I'm going to toss this out there for those of you who need it. If you don't know _Soul Coughing,_ you should. Fantastic jazz-influenced alt-pop band from the 90s. 1) First step, buy all three of their CDs. "Ruby Vroom," "Irresistible Bliss," and "El Oso." You can skip El Oso, if you like, though it has its moments. (Alternatively, download these songs and buy them later.) 2) Second step, set up a quick playlist of these songs: Sugar ... MORE
