I couldn't help but to notice that this week, the same week their new 'music label' issued a compilation disc from Sonic Youth, that Starbucks had to close 600 more stores. I have a feeling that in some New York City basement Kim, Thurston, and Lee are rocking out and totally digging the irony of all of this right about now. And with all due respect to Starbucks employees(I have been downsized - it sucks), but maybe if they didn't build a Starbucks on EVERY OT... MORE
Sonic Youth steamrolls through Neil Young's Computer age shedding sparks and shredding eardrums. And yet, its damn close to Neil's original, just more ferocious & frenzied, just the way I like it, uh-huh, uh-huh.

Why?
I like the music of then a lot more. Lately I've been listening to Sonic Youth and the Pixies on my way to work. I never realized how awesome Daydream Nation is. I love any song where Kim Gordon is doing her sexy talking/singing voice. The guitar crunchiness of each song just takes me back to the early 90's (when I was in 8th/9th grade).
I miss those times.

Photo © Penningtron McCarren Park -- Brooklyn's hot spot for indie rock concerts and general summertime fun -- has officially closed down. Well, at least as a concert venue. The hipster mecca has succumbed to local community forces and will return to its original status as a community pool. Sonic Youth closed out the venue with a final show this past Saturday, and brooklynvegan has the photos from the night. The NY Times has a nice little retrospectiv... MORE

A little Sonic Youth:
In a completely unrelated thought, this Feist song gets stuck in my head everytime that new Ipod Nano commercial comes on:
I'm supposed to review Prince's Planet Earth today. I will (perhaps in brief). Just not yet. First, let's talk about the good things in life. (Oh snap...) Last night, I had a phenomenal time. Sean and I waltzed into the Berkeley Community Theatre at 9:15 AM and promptly realized we had missed "Teen Age Riot" when we heard the opening of "Silver Rocket" from the front doors. It was a bummer, but I'd seen them do it. (Sean hadn't.) From there on, it was a perfect performance... MORE
The reissue of Sonic Youth's 1988 masterpiece, Daydream Nation, is a two-CD set that will include what was when it was first released a two album vinyl set on one CD, and another CD, "Live Daydream," of for the most part previously unreleased live recordings. The album will be released June 12. That second disc features 15 live performances from the band's "Daydream Nation" Tour. Culled from performances at CBGB's in New York City to The Paradiso in Amsterdam (and severa... MORE
Sonic Youth will perform their entire 1988 album, Daydream Nation, at the Pitchfork Music Festival's collaboration with All Tomorrow's Parties' Don't Look Back concert in Chicago July 13, 2007. Daydream Nation is considered by some critics to be one of the greatest rock albums; among the amazing songs on it is the classic "Teenage Riot." In the U.S. Sonic Youth will also perform Daydream Nation at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley, CA on July 19 and the Greek Th... MORE
Rolling Stone has the goods today - 2 songs off the upcoming deluxe edition of Daydream Nation from Sonic Youth. You can listen to streaming audio of "Teen Age Riot" and "Silver Rocket" off the RS blog. Of course, most dyed in the wool Sonic Youth fans already have these in their collections (the streams are the older unremastered versions from the first release), but it's a nice taste for those of you who have discovered SY long after the 1988 release of the original al... A deluxe double CD version of Sonic Youth's classic and highly influential epic, Daydream Nation, will be released this June. The new version will include bonus tracks and new liner notes. Daydream Nation, Sonic Youth's sixth album, was first released in 1988, when vinyl still ruled the land. It was the group's first two-album set, clocking in at over 70 minutes, and included the amazing "Teenage Riot," among it's musical gems. Cover art - two early '80s paintings - are... MORE
My granddaughter came home from school the other day, an' proudly announced that she (an' everyone else) has a "BAD FINGER"! Yep. "when ya hold THIS finger up all by itself, its bad", she told me. I did not ask her to explain. Now i know some folks are gonna find this amusin', but my gawd peeps, what are we doin'? Our children's innocence is bein' sacrificed on the altar of information, an' then we bemoan the daydream nation. This toxic culture of instant gratification ha... MORE
