Arriving several months before Nirvana's Nevermind, the Smashing Pumpkins' debut album, Gish, which was also produced by Butch Vig, was the first shot of the alternative revolution that transformed the ock & roll landscape of the '90s. While Nirvana was a punk band, the Smashing Pumpkins and guitarist/vocalist Billy Corgan are arena rockers, co-opting their metallic riffs and epic art rock song structures with self-absorbed lyrical confessions. Though Corgan's lyrics fall apart upon close analysis, there's no denying his gift for arrangements. Like Brian May and Jimmy Page, he knows how to layer guitars for maximum effect, whether it's on the pounding, sub-Sabbath rush of "I Am One" or the shimmering, psychedelic dream pop surfaces of "Rhinoceros." Such musical moments like these, as well as the rushing "Siva" and the folky "Daydream," which features D'Arcy on lead vocals, demonstrate the Smashing Pumpkins' potential, but the rest of Gish falls prey to undistinguished songwriting and showy instrumentation.

while sitting here, reading my posts, eating icy-poles and listening to the Killers (Hot Fuss atm.. Love it) I have come to the conclusion that, infact, Rhinoceros is not the best song on Gish. All shall know that! There is no 'best' song.. there is personal favourites, like mine; Bury Me, but Rhinoceros isn't even the best. It is slow, boring and half the time you can't hear the lyrics. I'm no...

In the year of 1991. I was going out with a girl that I certainly thought was going to be my wife one day. I was stricken with stupid cupids arrow. In that very year, August to be exact, she confronted me with the "Let's just be friends" speech as she was getting ready to go to collage and wanted freedom from our relational status. I was amorously devastated. I really thought this girl was going t

VENUE SPOTLIGHT: The Garage/23 Parrish (Denver, CO)

I'm surprised I don't see The Garage come up in Google! At it's peak there were 3 or 4 nightclubs operating in this huge warehouse in Denver. 23 Parrish was a pirate themed dance club with lots of areas to lounge, hang out, shoot pool. The Garage was the live music venue. I think my last visit to the Garage was on the night that the first Lollapalooza tour careened into town. Perry Ferrell...
