It’s a sad coincidence that this has come to light on the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, but reclusive funk legend, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Woodstock performer Sly Stone has revealed he is living on Social Security following...

In a calendar oddity that happens every seven years or so, my birthday has fallen on Thanksgiving – our annual celebration of colonization and genocide. Just kidding. It’s our national holiday devoted to over-indulgence and sloth. Just kidding. It’s a chance for the citizens of America to express gratitude over the limitless bounty that we enjoy here in the greatest, most civilized and chari

Life: A Forgotten Sly and the Family Stone Classic

"You don't have to die before you've lived..."Two years ago, I bought The Collection by Sly and the Family Stone for fifty dollars American. For that money, I got the seven proper albums of Sly Stone and his non-traditional family, all complete with bonus tracks. Aside from missing an essential eighth disc tying up stray single sides (including the Loadstone single, the French Fries single and ...

It has done this a number of times, but this time amazed me more than ususal, because of how many tracks there are on bo...

ABWA (Another Busy Weekend Ahead)

Sometimes I am almost releaved for Mondays...my weekends are just getting more and more busy. This weekend will not be any different. My brother and his family move from Boston to the Bay Area in August, and since then we have been trying to see them every weekend. He has two of the sweetest girls and they are absolutely crazy for their big cousin Stanley...to quote my sister-in-law "If they...

Junkie Funk

At this point in his career Sly was a truely tortured soul. Deep in the throes of hopeless addictions, he none the less produced this dissolute masterpiece. An impressionistic portrait of Funk in junkie's time. All bass and bottom with an icy brittle guitar impersonating a horn section. Sly stabs and slashes on the keyboards, and a percolating, simmering rage informs the whole track.
