Album Review: Just A Little Lovin' by Shelby Lynn

(93)
Blog post image preview Rating 7.5How Proud would Dusty Springfield be? 8.5Summary Shelby handles Dusty's ditties with the gentle caress of a first time lover. of course, a little "day after awkwardness" is normal. Ah...the cover Album. That most guilty of audio pleasures tends to be a surprisingly delectable creation or a bloating greasy confection...but either way, in the end, is usually just empty calories. So why do artists do it? Do they not see the inherent braggadocio in trying ... MORE

Blog post image preview Here's a new music video from Shelby Lynne for a track off her new Dusty Springfeild- inspired album Just A Little Lovin'. The mellow ballad, "Anyone Who Had A Heart" features songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David and showcases Lynne's voice without any background or harmony vocals, like most tracks off Just A Little Lovin'. The organic track's video also follows the alt-country singer through a morning regime of waking up and drinking coffee.

Gotta love a female singer who is quoted in today's paper saying “I don’t have an iPod,” she said. “I have a computer that I turn on occasionally. I still have all my vinyl. Sissy” — her nickname for Moorer, who lives in New York with her husband, the alt-country singer Steve Earle — “says she has no room in her apartment for records, but I’d keep mine even if I had to sleep on them. You can’t roll a joint on an iPod.” NY Times magazine article Shelby Lynne's Dusty Trail

Shelby Lynne's new album will be out Feb. 5. Lot of buzz on it. She's an amazing singer. The album, Just A Little Lovin', finds her covering Dusty Springfield. It's gotten raves from many who have heard it. Here's a video of Lynne recording one of the tracks.

New Album from Shelby Lynne, Its a nice jazzy album that covers some great classic songs. This one is a Dusty Springfield song that I love. I only want to be with you: I dont know what it is that makes me love you so I only know I never want to let you go cause youve started something Oh, cant you see? That ever since we met Youve had a hold on me It happens to be true I only want to be with you

Seriously, where do you all find the time and energy to mog all the time, and comment, and keep up with everything? I'm so out of the loop, it's a miracle when I buy something new. Emscee, who should know (having been largely responsible for my musical upbringing), once said that my record-buying choices had been distilled down to "people you know, or people who sound like people you know, or people you don't know doing songs you do know." Which is true. So how cool is i... MORE

This is a great album. Shelby Lynne's covers of old Dusty Springfield songs may be better than the original versions. She has a most beautiful voice, and sends shivers up my spine with her styling of them.

New Shelby Lynne on Rhapsody Early

Blog post image preview Shelby's new CD is out a week early on Rhaposdy if you have not been over there recently. Won't let me link a song -- but how 'bout this almost big hit from her best record "I Am Shelby Lynne." Big story on her in last week's New York Times Magazine, where we learn she lives in Palm Springs, doesn't work out, but enjoys yard work. She can cut my grass anytime!

With Amy Winehouse love going on on MOG it made me think of female singers of the past several years that are graced with the moniker of the next big thing and their albums are called the new "Dusty in Memphis". Shelby Lynne started off as a country singer on Epic Records and did a duet with George Jones in 1988 as well as having several songs on the country charts. Lynne was disillusioned and unhappy with the way that Epic was pushing her career and split with them an... MORE

Your Lies

Blog post image preview I just stumbled on Shelby Lynne's first record. I hadn't heard it, probably, since it came out back in 2000. I forgot how amazing "Your Lies" sounds, part mid-'70s Carole King / Neil Diamond pomp (thanks mike mcguirk, for that description from Rhapsody), part country soul, belted from gut. Listen to it at Napster's free song thingy.
