Sunday Covers: Shawn Colvin sings Warren Zevon
over 2 years ago

This morning I thought I'd do a trio of cover posts featuring women singing songs written by men about girls in transition. Just cause, I am. After seven years of not speaking to me, my mother sent me a letter on my birthday asking to see me. I can't promise an Oprah moment. I have a feeling it's going to be more like Jerry Springer, actually. I am very, very apprehensive about what's going to ...

TWILIGHT ON SUNDAY MORNING UNDER THE COVERS
about 1 year ago

This is such a poignant lyric.**Robbie Robertson's** minor gem seems to be (IMHO) one of those songs that just _cannot_ be done badly.Heaven knows **Jerry Lee Lewis** tried, he even collaborated with Robbie, and though the song came out pretty good, it still lacked the proper ambience.I don't think the Band ever nailed it completely, there are several 'officially released outtakes' in addition ...

Shawn Colvin fans: You may've missed this one.

One of the things I love about the digital age is the ability to cherry-pick a song by an artist I love off of a soundtrack CD without spending $17. And, somehow, I think that fans of *Shawn Colvin*, who writes gorgeous folk-pop songs are not the same ones watching teenage soap TV programs like ??Dawson's Creek??. So, like me, unless you are searching iTunes for one-off tracks like this, you ma...

I saw Shawn Colvin in concert for the first time a couple of weeks ago when she played the Keswick Theater in Glenside, PA. She had a small band with her, which luckily included Buddy Miller, a fantastic guitarist and vocalist who has released many Americana / Country albums solo and with his wife Julie Miller. Shawn recently released her first album in many years, These Four Walls. The CD is e...

    Back To Salome

For some odd reason, this "end title" tune came to mind as I looked over posts by trusted MOGgers. That's a house in Tubac, AZ, which I think may have stood in for exteriors of "Salome, TX," since Arlington and Kingwood, TX look way too upscale. I wonder if that's Mickey Jones' "Double Bogie Blues" rattling around in the golf bag?

Introspective and Melancholy Music: An Historical Approach
about 1 year ago

From my Ithaca sojourn (early 20s) until that fateful Nebraska day I gave up music, this was the introspective and melancholy album and this was the song. keep a pencil and a bookI say this is how a life can lookRussian roulette, French-kissed cigaretteAnd the silence like an anvilThe things that you learn, but now all that burnsIs a candleAnd the fog melts over the night, and it softens the edge...

I have Lost Too Much Sleep; I'm Gonna Find It
about 1 year ago

This is late night driving, no destination, just driving around Ithaca, me and my friend Chris in his car, listening to music: Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Crowded House, and this one, the only thing I've ever stole, except he spared me the infamy of stealing by giving it as a gift when it became clear I was never going to return it. and I have it steal (wops, still), one of a few cassettes I've hun...

This track from the movie "Tin Cup" has always made me wonder how/why it was written. The next question was, when or where would it be appropriate to post this interesting end theme. With the peaceful transfer of power impending, now's as good a time as any to bid 2008 "good riddance!" (And wonder if 2009's theme is "A Little Bit Is Better Than Nada"?)

If losing sleep were any indicationOf the loving that I've missedI would wrap myself around youBut how likely can that be when I feel like thisAnd if life were not unfortunateAnd reason blew like summer through the treesI would stop to let you catch meBut I think that you would find me on my kneesAnd it's gonna be another long one tonightIt's just me and my well-intentioned spiteI said someone ...
