With the Hopeless Records release entitled The Curse of the Selby Tigers, the Selby Tigers bring a sound reminiscent of glory days past, such as the go-getting and feverish freedom of the Ramones, the compelling and brash attitude of the B-52's, and the charm of Devo. Yet with the twist of garage punk spirit, call-and-response vocals, thunderous vocal statements, and rambunctious personality, this Minneapolis quartet doesn't fail to keep its soul and unique character. And with adventurous music and soaring soundscapes penetrating the listener's mind, this record is a noteworthy achievement, helping the Selby Tigers join the ranks of the indie garage rock elite. The delivery of the vocals is a fiery statement in itself. The band's performance and instrumental ability may lack finesse at times, but what the group lacks in grace it makes up proudly with honest intensity and passionate flair. Charisma and continuously flowing energy are the two major components that fuel this exuberant band. Though they may seem like a raw mixture of garage punk and indie rock, their touch is still felt in the manner of dance. Perhaps that's a major part of why, as a record and piece of musical art, The Curse of the Selby Tigers is so appealing to the zealous indie rock listener.
