Several years ago, the three piece Brooklyn-via-Dallas psychedelic hard rock act The Secret Machines seemed poised for big things after having released two well received albums, playing an incendiary late-night set at Bonnaroo, completing a co-headlining tour with KoL and an inventive in-the-round tour of their own. A funny thing happened though amongst all the [...]

- MUSIC REVIEWS "I wonder what you do when the last believer has dropped dead?" I know! You go on reaching for that angst-rock opus in the sky, audience be damned. I guess that line, taken from the chorus of the second track on Secret Machines , "Last Believer, Drop Dead," is actually about the early Christians or somethin’ heavy like that. But it might as well refer to the situation the Machines find themselves in. The loss of founding member Ben Curtis, brother to sing... MORE

The Secret Machines are the creators of one of my favourite albums of this decade with their 2004 release Now Here Is Nowhere . They've been through Toronto at least a few times since then, but each time they've been here, there has been some major conflict that prevented me from getting out to the ... MORE

The Secret Machines, once pegged the next Pink Floyd (by me) after the release of the continously-play-from-start-to-finish Now Here Is Nowhere, and then screwed that up with the follow-up of the more commercial and pop-driven Ten Silver Drops have got some new album news. TSM, now drummer Josh Garza, multi-instrumentalist Brandon Curtis and new guitarist Phil Karnats, who replaced Curtis' little brother Benjamin, has left Warner/Reprise (dropped?) and signed with Worl... Fans of Fake Blood will love Cambridge-based KiD COLA 's remix of Secret Machines ' "Atomic Heels". It's got an eerie, droning bassline synth with fantastic drum programming. The remix takes the original track into harder dance territory, and it's great.

This was the first song of their's I've heard, and that was just a couple of nights ago. So an expert I am not. If you know the music of Amplifier, you will notice a similarity. What grabbed me was the unchanging drum accompaniement to the gradual crescendo that left me breathless. Worth a listen. (Anybody else notice how challenging it can be to come up with something brilliant to say night after night?)

NYC psych-band the Secret Machines is currently in th e studio recording their third full-length album for Reprise Records, which will be released in2008. The band, who lost guitarist, Benjamin Curtis to the band School of Seven Bells, has enlisted new guitarist Phil Karnats, who they know from their pre-NYC days in Dallas, Texas. Benjamin and Phil played together in Tripping Daisy and later in the band When Babies Eat Pennies. Phil and drummer Josh Garza also played in a ... MORE
