I just noticed that Fader Mag has at least a dozen totally different new tunes streaming this week that I thought many of you would be interested in. Especially since most of them are accompanied with free legal downloads! For all the posts lined up, jump to their audio page: FADER audio Or click these on individual posts: A weird Brasilian remix of Estelle & Kanye's "American Boy" by DJ Sujinho

From my posts it is apparent that I don't often stray from the music that I prefer - that music being somber alt. country. My cousin often chastises me and tells me that I need to get back to the middle, that my "sad bastard" music (a la Jack Black from High Fidelity) isn't good for my emotional well-being.
I've always ruminated on his advice, but I've struggled to find that middle that he is referring to. I try to seek out non-alt. country bands, but they don't pull me... MORE

Am I the only one out there who thinks this stuff doesn't really sound that great? I mean... it's cool because it's different than most stuff out there, I guess. But I feel like she's the latest in this string of blog-babies that's getting love because there's something electro and kooky happening in the sound; but the music aint always that good. Not to mention that the stuff sounds REMARKABLY like everything ESG did back in 1978... from the aggro-non-singing-melody-scre... MORE

Latest obsession: Santogold
While she is most frequently compared to the musical style of M.I.A., her own music is all over the map, which makes her much more accessible to the general audiences. In Santogold's music I can hear inflections of Pixies, Breeders, YYY 's, Tegan & Sarah, and even some Joy Division (the male voice (Trouble Andrew) in the background of "I'm A Lady") And there is nothing more admirable than an artist who refuses to limit herself to a single... In one of those 6ยบ of separation moments I found myself emailing Justin who runs the Muxtape mixtape-sharing web site wondering why I couldn't register on the site with the username 'Pampelmoose.' He said he'd look into it and also said he enjoys Gang of Four [which is always nice to hear] and that he was surprised to hear that I was living in Portland because that was his hometown - he's now based in New York. So he does his detective work and discovers that Nic... MORE

it's funny, i normally listen only to certain type of music. i used to dislake music that wasn't played with strong guitar solos or interesting basslines. but these last few weeks i've been listening to so many different gengres it's amazing! i found sooo many good artists and bands that it would take a few days just to list them.
last night i was wondering why on earth have i started to like house and dub, and then it hit me. it's the spring! summer is coming and everything... MORE

Santogold released her first music video today, for her song "L.E.S. Artistes": This video was directed by Nima Nourizadeh and the song is off Santogold's upcoming debut album Creator.
A few months ago, I posted the video of Santi performing this live France's Transmusicalles Festival, but this is the first "official" video production from the Brooklyn star.... MORE

So a while back in September, I gave serious kudos to Santogold, who trumps MIA with her energy and frenetic dancehall rap on-stage. Since, she's gotten the Fader cover...and she's been signed to Lizard Kings records.
So I've been doing a bit of background research, since her flame seems destined to last much longer than a candle with a little fuse.
She was in a punk ska band called Stiffed. Reminds me of Gwen Stefani prior to her empire. Check it:

Loads of people are saying that Santogold is the artist to watch in 2008. Her electroclash hip hop style is catching on worldwide thanks to collaborations with Diplo and Switch, the producers that made M.I.A. a star. Earlier this week, Santogold was a guest dj on Mary Anne Hobbs BBC radio show and you can listen to the archive of her dj mix until the new show goes up next week. But if you'd rather get a taste of her own music with Diplo, the Mad Decent family has uploade... MORE

And this is the beauty of Coachella...once
i accepted the whole Jack Johnson as a headliner debacle and started to dive into the lineup, i keep finding more and more bands that I am going to want to check out. Today's big winner is Brooklyn's Santogold...here is a tune from the EP 'I Believe In Santogold' It's been getting several spins here on radio free Blair... MORE

If M.I.A. lays low this year, it might give Santogold a chance to shine. Santo has been compared to M.I.A., probably based more on looks than anything else (both have a thing for outlandish 80's neons and patterns), but in fact, the 2 artists are quite different. Santogold, real name Santi White, from NYC and formerly of the band Stiffed, now works with the same producers that bumped M.I.A. to mega stardom: Diplo and Switch. Santogold is not new to music journalists and ... MORE
