AMG Review of Copenhagen Boogie
Scott Yanow
All Music GuidePianist Sammy Price's solo and trio work tended to emphasize the blues and boogie-woogie, so it was always fun to hear him playing jazz standards with a larger group. Although this LP has five blues-oriented pieces (including "St. Louis Blues"), it also finds Price taking an unaccompanied solo on "Begin the Beguine" and jamming "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Please Don't Talk About Me When You're Gone." On most of the songs, Price is joined by a four-horn sextet from Scandinavia that includes trombonist/leader Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen, trumpeter Finn Otto Hansen and two fine reed players. The ensembles are consistently joyous; Price is still in prime form at this late date (he was 67), and the results are quite enjoyable.
