The recordings on 16 Great Songs of the Old West were made by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in the mid-'50s for Golden Records. Backed by vocal group the Ranch Hands and directed by Mitch Miller, the duo cover many of the best known songs of the West, including "Home on the Range," "Colorado Trail," "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," and "Red River Valley." Rogers and Evans sound great as they negotiate this well-worn material, some of which they'd recorded before. 16 Great Songs would be a fine introduction for newcomers who wish to explore Western music, while old timers will appreciate the solid performances even if the obvious choices of material hold no surprises.
