AMG Review of Thank You Thank You
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideRoy Haynes, who came up shortly after Max Roach and Art Blakey, has been a major drummer since the late '40s but has never gotten quite the recognition he deserves. This somewhat obscure outing features Haynes in a variety of settings including a duet with percussionist Kenneth Nash, a pair of quartets with either George Cables or Stanley Cowell on piano, a quintet on the title cut featuring the tenor of John Klemmer and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, and a selection with a two-keyboard septet. The music ranges from poppish to more straightahead with plenty of diverse moods explored.
