AMG Review of Roy Eldridge & Vic Dickenson

All Music GuideRoy Eldridge is in better-than-expected form for what would be his final recording before a heart attack forced him to give up the trumpet. Teamed up with trombonist Vic Dickenson, tenorman Budd Johnson, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Major Holley and drummer Eddie Locke (who was actually the organizer of the date), Eldridge and his friends play a lengthy ad-lib blues and eight familiar standards. This Storyville CD is well worth picking up by straightahead, swing and mainstream jazz fans.
