AMG Review of Boogie Honky Tonk
Bill Dahl
All Music GuideVinyl compilation of the pianist's 1944-1947 output for RCA with his jumping little combo, the Honeydrippers, all of it cut in Chicago. Backed by a myriad of swinging Windy City sidemen (saxists Leon Washington, J.T. Brown, and Bill Casimir; bassist Ransom Knowling, drumemrs Jump Jackson and Judge Riley), Sykes rips through "Peeping Tom," and the wonderfully titled "Flames of Jive," and his often-covered "Sunny Road" with ebullient charm.
