Originally put out by the Canadian label Innovation and made available in the U.S. by the short-lived Palo Alto label, this outing by Rob McConnell's 22-piece Boss Brass has eight typically swinging and fresh arrangements by the leader. He reinvents "I Got Rhythm," contributes three originals (including "Phil Not Bill" and "Schlep It Up to Joe"), and uplifts three jazz standards and Loonis McGloohan's "Songbird." As usual, the Boss Brass, which has had very little turnover through the years, features many top soloists, including altoist Moe Koffman, flugelhornist Guido Basso (showcased on "Close Enough for Love"), the tenors of Rick Wilkins and Eugene Amaro, and guitarist Ed Bickert, in addition to McConnell on valve trombone. A fine, if little-known effort.
