Beautiful dog.

Blog post image preview BazoMay 6 1998- February 22, 2008 February 22, 2008 Today I said good-bye to my first dog, Mambazo Daisy Slade Brown Schaaf. The final farewell felt pretty close to what I had imagined it would: the pain, the tissues, and the denial. It was all there. Cancer in December. Tests, organ removal. Wagging tail, one last romp here, one last walk here. The way I found her. The noises she was making. But the deep sadness has a cataclysmic, dreadful twist to it. Even now it i... MORE

Rickie Lee Jones does The Beatles

(31)
Blog post image preview One of my favorite CDs by Rickie Lee Jones is the one of all cover tunes, It's Like This. I've always loved her voice. Her own compositions? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. As Beatles covers go, this is not a re-invention but not a slavish copy either. A good Sunday morning tune.

Duchess of Coolsville

Blog post image preview and believe me, the moniker could refer to no one but Rickie Lee Jones Do I love this woman? Damn stright! and always have She is a personal favorite From the wik: Born in Chicago, Rickie Lee Jones grew up in a family she has described as “lower-middle-class-hillbilly-hipster” in Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Arizona, and Olympia, Washington. Her grandfather, nicknamed “Peg Leg Jones,” had come from a vaudeville background, and Jones has spoken of her Welsh ance... MORE

Falling Up

Get the album! It's like Van Morisson's Astral Weeks....She went into the studio- they had the music and a ray of light shined through her with the words.

Flying Cowboys

This Rickie Lee Jones song is five minutes and five seconds of trippy, hypnotic poetry; perfect for a thunderstormy, ominous Sunday afternoon. Or Monday, I guess, since it is Monday now, and I'm enjoying it just as much. I've heard that Rickie Lee Jones is one of those artists people either love or hate, and rarely feel indifferent towards. Well, obviously I fall in the former category. She doesn't spend months at a time in the CD player, like Hedwig & the Angry Inch, ... MORE

Well, I'm still on my Rickie Lee Jones kick. The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard simply won't let me be. (I forced myself to take a break last night to listen to The Nields' "Ash Wednesday" and a few other mellow songs. But I'm right back to it today.) Tonight, Jones is playing in St. Paul, Minnesota. A few hours from me. But I'm not going to be there. I really wish I were. I just hope to catch her in concert at another time. But the upside is that Minnesota Publ... MORE

I have been listening to one album almost exclusively for the last week. I keep hoping a review will gel in my mind for me to post. I'm not sure it has gelled. But I am sure that I cannot sit on this review any longer. A little over a week ago, I heard something about Rickie Lee Jones putting out a new album. I did a quick search on the web and found, sure enough, that her new album had come out a few days earlier. (How do these things slip by me???) So one week ag... MORE

RICKIE LEE JONES ON RING OF FIRE THIS WEEKEND

Artist:
Track:
Other Tags: Ring of Fire, Robert Kennedy, Jr., Air America, bush, Sqquirrel Nut Zippers
Blog post image preview Robert Kennedy's and Mike Papantonio's Air America show, Ring of Fire is pretty hard-hitting and not the place you might expect to catch up with a singer-singerwriter. But Rickie Lee Jones isn't exactly a typical singer-songwriter-- and she can be pretty hard-hitting herself. See for yourself this weekend when she joins Mike and Robert, Saturday 5- 7 PM (EST) and Sunday 3-5 PM in most cities. You can find your local Air America station at airamericaradio.com or listen onli... MORE

I thought I'd go through my list of artists and write a little something about each of them. I have a blog elsewhere in which I write a bunch of things, so I'll confine my comments here to music. I might as well start with Rickie Lee Jones, since she is apparently at the top of my music collection. And besides, I've already written a lot about her elsewhere. So here's a bit of something I wrote about her music just over a year ago, right after Duchess of Coolsville: ... MORE

RICKIE LEE JONES: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER UGLY MAN?

Artist:
Track: Have You Had Enough?, Ugly Man
Other Tags: Squirrel Nut Zippers
Blog post image preview Although Rickie Lee Jones has earned lots of gold and platinum awards for her music and graced the covers of countless magazines, many political activists know her, or have recently become reacquainted with her, because of the song she did with Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher, "Have You Had Enough?", used in the campaigns that helped elect a diverse array of progressive candidates, from congressmen and women-elect Jerry McNerney (CA-11), John Hall (NY-19), Chris Carney (PA-10),...
