AMG Review of Live at Crawley 1993
William Ruhlmann
All Music GuideAccompanied by acoustic bassist Danny Thompson, acoustic guitarist Richard Thompson presents stripped-down versions of some of the songs featured on his recent albums. Thompson is an engaging performer, whose nuances and improvisations can be appreciated well in this intimate format. The album is a fan-club recording and "is part of our recent policy to regularly release live recordings...in an effort to stop inferior bootleg versions...," Thompson writes in the liner notes. Of course, hardcore fans will buy both, but it's nice to see Thompson joining the Grateful Dead in finding a way outside the usual record-company structure to address his fans' desires.
