With the US government bailing out failed financial institutions left and right, I was wondering if perhaps I could apply for a bail out for myself.

Oops! I did it again (Richard Thompson cover)

Britney's had a rough go of it lately. But it takes Richard Thompson to bring out the soul and emotion in this song. I heard him play this in the studio on NPR's fresh air prgram with Teri Gross, it was hilarious and amazing.

Dear Janet Jackson

Blog post image preview Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is out in May, and it's a beauty. Playing it through a few times today got me to thinking about one of his songs from a few years back, a little-known tune 'Dear Janet Jackson', which he wrote and performed just a couple of days after the notorious Superbowl incident of 2004.

The musical equivalent of my soul mate

Blog post image preview I'm sure everyone has those moments when they hear an artist for the first time, that moment like a thunderclap when a singer, songwriter, musician, band is suddenly elevated into the upper echelon of your personal jukebox, and you've got a pretty good hunch that they will claim a position amongst your all time favorites. But what's even better is when you find one of these artists and they already have an extensive catalog of albums just sitting there, waiting for you to ... MORE

Jameson has done a post about Maxim magazine 'reviewing' the new Black Crowes album without actually hearing it. The following is (eesntially) a comment that i wrote to that post, afterwards deciding that it was of sufficient general musical interest that i thought i ought to expose the membership in general to it. (Sort of like exposing the membership in general to the common cold or low-level radiation, perhaps...): While i have certain problems with The Black Crowe... MORE

Blog post image preview ...I'm ashamed this guy is from my home state of Colorado (no, not Mr. Hitchcock — the "Honorable" Tom Tancredo).
From CNN:     "Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo's campaign stood by his assertion that bombing holy Muslim sites would serve as a good 'deterrent' to prevent Islamic fundamentalists from attacking the United States, his spokeswoman said Friday.     'This shows that we mean business,' said Bay Buchanan, a senior Tancredo adviser. 'There's no more effective deterrent th... MORE

{To anyone who tried to play the clip and got the Chipmunks - sorry. It's fixed.} Richard Thompson has a reputation as a bit of a purveyor of doom'n'gloom. And there's lot in his songs, to be sure. But the man also possesses one of the most bizarre senses of humour around, when he chooses to let it out of its cage. WARNING: The Following Is NOT Safe for Work!!

(MOG seems to have eaten my homework again, so if this comes through to you as a duplicate post, i'm sorry...) On the Audio Downloads page on Richard Thompson’s website, i found a little gem entitled I Agree with Pat Metheney. Now, i thought that Ray Davies’ Prince of the Punks (which people who seem to know have said was a shot at Tom Robinson) was about the acme of putting the musical boot in with viciously singable lyrics set to a catchy tune… But RT’s savaging of... It'd be easy to ignore another record by Richard Thompson, because he's so dependably excellent. That would be a mistake though, because no one is better at what he does, a sort of celtic-based but kitchen sink-influenced brand of passionate folk rock...as bitterly sardonic as anything you'll hear. Thompson has a new album called "Sweet Warrior" out, and it's a real sleeper. Here's one of the best songs on it, a very pretty piece called "Poppy Red".

So, Richard Thompson has a new album out, called Sweet Warrior. Thompson has been around playing and writing music since before the days of the Vietnam war, so you can bet there's an anti-war tune on this record. Here's the thing...this man is a genuis musician...by his peers he's considered one of the most accomplished guitarists...evah. He played with Nick Drake and was a founding member of Fairport Convention...for the love of pete. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing... MORE

Blog post image preview On May 29, Shout! Factory will release Richard Thompson's Sweet Warrior. The Album is his first work of all-new material since 2005’s Front Parlour Ballads (Cooking Vinyl) and his first electric disc since 2003’s The Old Kit Bag (Beeswing). Thompson was first recorded in 1967. Although most his work has maintained critical acclaim, he has yet to become a household name - with the exception of Front Parlour Ballads which debuted in the indie charts on both sides of the A...
