Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan were not pioneers of the art of jugalbandi in Hindustani music. But their jugalbandis set new heights and in the 1950s their jugalbandi reached new heights of popularity. One commentator in 1957 ascribed its popularity as "due essentially to the Ali Akbar Khan-Ravi Shankar combination." Others explored the sarod-sitar combination -- Ishtiaq Ahmad and Illyas Khan, Bahadur Khan and Nikhil Banerjee -- but it reached its apogee with Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. This 1960s jugalbandi shows the famous flower in full bloom. It contains a 56-minute interpretation of "Raga Mishra Piloo" with tabla accompaniment by Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain.
