Using the textured soundscapes of The Bends as a launching pad, Radiohead delivered another startlingly accomplished set of modern guitar rock with OK Computer. The anthemic guitar heroics present on Pablo Honey and even The Bends are nowhere to be heard here. Radiohead have stripped away many of the obvious elements of guitar rock, creating music that is subtle and textured yet still has the feeling of ock & roll. Even at its most adventurous -- such as the complex, multi-segmented "Paranoid Android" -- the band is tight, melodic, and muscular, and Thom Yorke's voice effortlessly shifts from a sweet falsetto to vicious snarls. It's a thoroughly astonishing demonstration of musical virtuosity and becomes even more impressive with repeated listens, which reveal subtleties like electronica rhythms, eerie keyboards, odd time signatures, and complex syncopations. Yet all of this would simply be showmanship if the songs weren't strong in themselves, and OK Computer is filled with moody masterpieces, from the shimmering "Subterranean Homesick Alien" and the sighing "Karma Police" to the gothic crawl of "Exit Music (For a Film)." OK Computer is the album that establishes Radiohead as one of the most inventive and rewarding guitar rock bands of the '90s.
San Francisco's Outside Lands, spread out over the verdant core of Golden Gate Park, in its first year, is one of the biggest music festival ever in Northern California. Friday's show was expected to draw 50,000+ fans and in total draw about 180,000 people over the weekend. We came with merry thoughts of an ideal line-up, from Beck to Radiohead to Manu Chao and Cold War Kids, while relaxing und...
Part 2 - Exit Music We had an family members birthday party to attend, which meant that if the concert were possible, I would miss The Liars. This was a sacrifice I was willing to make since I wasn't familiar with their music. I never would have done such a dis-service to an opening band in the past (unless I really didn't like them), but my time is so limited, it seemed like the best way to ...
I was reading my Lefsetz Letter and there were people commenting on the fact there are no good albums, that's why most people are buying songs off of i-tunes, etc. Some people commented that there haven't been good albums that you can listen to beginning to end for years. Myself I don't think there is a perfect album but some have come close and, gasp, they've actually come within the last 20 y...
Alright, so maybe a tad on the vulgar side for a Sunday morning (but that's why i love mog!) :PI've re-discovered Radiohead, and I'm soooo loving them. Even 'Fitter Happier', which used to really creep me out, until i read the "the words":http://www.sing365.com/music/Lyric.nsf/FITTER-HAPPIER-lyrics-Radiohead/C5D87F9041CA308748256866000FF586.Now it's not so bad...The whole album us great (OK Com...
An interesting analysis of Radiohead's album OK ComputerNed Ludd’s RadioheadBy Christopher Stratton"ExploreFaith.org":http://www.explorefaith.org/music/radiohead.htmlIn the year 1811, a man named Ned Ludd sent intimidating letters to various textile employers in Nottingham, Great Britain. The complaint? Machines were taking over too many tasks typically handled by craftsmen. The workers were un.

_today we escape._I made the most amazing discovery last night, around 1:30 AM. I'm awake, so I decided to get some fresh night air. I went to my window, opened it, and took out the screen, hopped out, and walked around the front garden. The moon was pale and the sky was perfectly colored blue and pale purple. The air smells so GREAT at that time of night, it's so good. The weather was perfect ...
I heard a dub cover of Radiohead's Let Down today on the radio, off OK Computer, of course, but I can't find it anywhere. It's by Tootsie and somebody??, or something like that, I vaguely remember the DJ saying. He also said there was a whole record of Radiohead tracks covered in a dub style by the artist, and I'm really keen to get hold of it.Any ideas???? Any clues???I did a Google search, bu...

I don't even remember what made me buy it, I think I just saw it in a used cd store and I grabbed it because it was probably like, four dollars or something. Anyway, to me, they're in the top ten all time. But I haven't li...
Sorry Deadman but you`re dead wrong ( i thought it was funny, sorry ), I understand the exact type you are talking about but I happen to be the exact opposite. My problem is probably caring a little too much and I`m frustrated about not being able to do more than I am. Call it my own little messiah complex if you will. You say that you were in the military at one point so you should be familiar...

So, iTunes didn't download. Argh. When I get a solid weekend, I fix it up right. I don't have the time right now, with finals and the holidays (very) fast approaching. But once it's there on my computer, it'll be there for good. Technology is sometimes frustrating. For years I said that I wanted another Mac. Did I get one? No. Such as life. It's not the end of the world. I have my health, my fr...
I've been on a huge Radiohead kick these last few days, and I thought of this video this morning. Its exactly how I'd like to finish off the weekend: No alarms and no surprises:Try to hold your breath as long as he does.

Indie favorite, Stereogum, has a hilarious report from a reader about the "secret show" that White Stripes fans searched for in St. John's, Newfoundland. Having heard reports of these surprise performances from every Canadian town that the pair had played in already, St. John locals were ready for a hot pursuit to find theirs. Well, the pursuit ended up being cold and rainy, but at least the ...
It's about one in the morning here in SF and my feet still ache just as much as they did three hours ago when a mass of 60,000 of us tried to exit Golden Gate Park, the site of this years Outside Lands Festival. As with every music festival known in the history of man, a swift exit was just not in the cards for us. After the crowd tore down a fence, we trampled through the forest and the trees ...

It says that the music industry's revenue fr...

I love politics. I have been a junkie of it since reading Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72", which still ranks to me as one of the best books written about politics ever. I read fivethirthyeight.com daily. I burn out on Huffington Post, CNN, and even have subjected my dear wife to C-Span and PCN, the Pennsylvania gov channel. I have been known to watch our t...
