The last 2 weeks have been so busy, that it took me some time to catch up on MOG. One of the post that got me thinking was Anna’s post about live records killing live music, read it here -> http://mog.com/Anna/blog_post/16975 I started to think about songs where the live recorded version blows the studio version out of the water. Dark Surprise by Radio Birdman is one of these songs. Some years ago I picked up a bootleg with the studio version of this song and the studio... MORE
Radio Birdman is heading out to the US for a spring tour. So far only two dates have been scheduled: June 19 at Slim's in San Francisco and June 20 at El Rey Theatre in LA. (At least the Slim's tickets appear to be on sale already.) If you have a chance to make it to any of the shows that are or will be scheduled, don't hesitate for a moment to jump at the opportunity to see the reunited legendary proto-punk rock'n'roll band who, by all accounts, still sweep the stage with... So, Half drunk from the pre-party at Bar Loose (look for post on that when I get back to the states), a smile plastered to my face from meeting old friends, new friends and members of bands that I dig (Thee Ultra Bimboos, The Patsy Walkers, The Barbe-b-q Barbies ect.) we staggered into the Birdman Gig and were met with one of the best rock shows that I have ever atteneded. They sounded great, they looked great, they had the energy of a band half their age and it was ever... MORE
to quote a song..... I'm leaving on a jet plane... headed down to Helsinki city where the men act like little girls, at least that's what the Hellacopters say..... Going to see Birdman there, drink some beer carouse with some rock and rollers and go broke...
more later
Its the date of their gig here in Athens.
They broke up the year I was born.
So i have a good excuse for not seeing them.
Up till now. Because they're back together.
And have a swell album out ("Zeno Beach").
This is rock'n'roll time.
Must undust my best air-guitar.
Alas another in a long line of me not realizing what day it is, being jet lagged or being out of town for a show I was looking forward to. This time it is Radio Birdman here in Cleveland. I always told myself I wouldn't be one of many female live music goers that has a Logan's Run curse: Age 28 and you suddenly bow out of seeing shows. Well, 28 hit and like many I've known before me, something has indeed happened. I used to keep a calendar of this shit, and now I find my... MORE
More thoughts: The new record makes me think of early Hellacopters... which maybe it should cause the Hellacopters are fans and friends of at least Dez Tek from Birdman... Both groups have been up front about the impact of The Stooges and The MC5 on their music, so maybe it's also a case of the fact that they are all living in the same Hi Energy Music space... How do I know that the 'Copters are friends with Dez Tek, it's simple I was there when they first met and play... MORE
I've listened to the album a bit more since my first post and a few things are sinking in... first musically it's strong and vital and harks back to earlier Birdman work with out being redundant. The vocals seem to be missing the bark and command of the past, but over all I am enjoying the process of discovering this album.. so far The Brotherhood of Al Wazah is my fave track
First listen.... Sooooo Radio Birdman is one of my all time fave bands, which is kinda strange cause I have only been listening to their music for a few years at this point, a few years it's scary to realize that it's been over 5 years that Birdman has been on my radar. For those not in the know, you mix a bit of Iggy/The Stooges/ The MC5 with some Ventures and some '77 punk and you have Birdman. Hi Energy rock and roll, kicking it out and now it's 2006 and they have re... MORE
