Being an olds, I can still remember vividly the first flush of "that-is-fucking-genius" feeling that I heard on Murmur and the Chronic Town EP. REM over the last three decades - Geebus, can it be that long? - has consistently issued some of the best, sweetest, saddest, and occasionally hip-groovin' sounds out there. Barack Obama is gaining ground! The Phillies are finally out of the metaphorical basement of the MLB! And (most importantly), R.E.M. are kickass again! I can die happy!
I heard Supernatural Superserious on 104.5 fm the other morning, and was really just surprised that Michael Stipe & co. can still write a damn good song, especially after the bleh they've been putting out lately. Great riff, great lyrics, great backing vocals even.

After two consecutive albums dominated by mid-tempo fare, R.E.M. gets back to its stripped-down, fast-paced rock roots on "Accelerate," due this week via Warner Bros. The 11-track set, which gets in and out in a lightning-quick 34 minutes and change, is led by the single "Supernatural Superserious."

Today comes the long awaited confirmation that R.E.M's Peter Buck and Michael Mills are straight. A play on the obsession media has with the band's frontman Michael Stipe's sexual orientation was announced today via press release and read: "R.E.M.'s Mike Mills and Peter Buck announced today that they are both, after years of awkward speculation, heterosexual, or "straight." The new new video for "Supernatural Superserious" which features R.E.M. playing music in a Manhattan sex shop is here! OK, the sex shop isn't a dominant part of the video, but it certainly made quite a stir when it was filmed there.
The video was directed by Vincent Moon and just uploaded today.
