Chilled-out or downbeat acts swept through the electronic scene during 2001 and 2002, prompting dozens of identikit compilations, all conjuring up images of exhausted clubbers returning home early in the morning and enjoying a cup of tea or a smoke after a hectic night out. And although downtempo electronica had always been largely album-based, most of these trackmasters didn't do much on the full-length front. The Norwegian duo Röyksopp, however, displayed a careful hand with the boards on their 2001 debut Melody A.M.. Röyksopp balances the haunted atmospheres of Boards of Canada with the more traditional "songwriting" sensibility of downbeat specialists like Groove Armada or Koop. The opener is proof enough, with a chunky bassline undergirding the spooky, ethereal refrain from Bobby Vinton's "Blue on Blue" recorded by some long-forgotten vocal chorus. There's much of beauty on Melody A.M., very textured and imaginatively produced to sound like few of their contemporaries; it's saying much to even admit that Röyksopp is occasionally the equal of such otherworldly acts as Boards of Canada or Goldfrapp. They seem a bit too indebted to the gauzy synths of '70s soundtracks, but there are a few good exceptions, like the distinctly '80s sense of artificial ethereality to the closer, "40 Years Back/Come." Picking up the ball right about where Air dropped it after Moon Safari, Röyksopp produced one of the most intriguing downbeat albums of the year.
I felt like the karate kid of the BBQ.Lid On...Lid Off...Lid On...Lid Off...Only the finest charcoal & wood chips would do.Look Amber...there is the tip of my shoe. The sun eventually made an appearance. Yeah!I like my applecider vinegar pull & slop sauce to be more tomatoey and less mustardy. I usually don't follow a traditional recipe. With fresh coleslaw, it was sooooo worth it.That's my boy...
So there's that new iPod commercial out, and every time I hear it.. I think of this song. And I want it to turn into this song, but it never does :(And I've seen the commercial about 50 times. My brain is sad.Though, it should be happy now, because I'm listening to the song.
it's been about 4 years now & disaronno® is still stuck on their "pass the pleasure around" ad campaign. despite its cheesiness, i think the ad's cinematography is kinda cool: everythin bathed in sepia light...everythin sorta timeless. i wonder how the soundtrack will fare, though. when will it start soundin dated?!http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/wine-club_1917_6329101!here's a _HIL..
Sounds drift from the television in the livingroom. Traveling like a cloud, down the hallway, taking a right towards my ears into the bedroom where I am computing. A playful techno beat with a synth keyboard bounce. A thoughtful lyric begs me to investigate:>And everywhere I go,There's always something to remind meOf another place and timeThe music from the Geico commercial with the caveman ...
The other day a co-worker sent me a link to this video, not only is it one of the best music videos I've seen in a long time, it introduced me to Röyksopp too, so that's hardly a bad thing. Anyhow, have a look:
