being generally regarded as having his golden era during the ska/rocksteady era, but this cut from the incredibly rare "Chi Chi Run" LP released in 1972 might shatter a few preconceptions. It is in fact a dub of an incredibly well-known reggae standard - a huge chart hit in the UK, and a long-time stage favourite of the Specials during the Two-Tone years. This track was also a huge live favourite played by the Specials during the Two-Tone era round about 1979-80.
Re: Ivylander's observations about the Prince's over-enunciating on his soul covers, this was clearly designed for the local audience, and as such his vocal is a tad more "relaxed"
This is Prince Buster's rather uniquely Jamaican take on the 23rd Psalm, dating from about 1966, and released on the "What A Hard Man Fe Dead" LP
In November last year I was privileged enough to see the grandfather of ska, Prince Buster, play ten minutes down the road from me. He's the guy who wrote One Step Beyond, Enjoy Yourself, Al Capone, Whine and Grine etc, made famous by two-tone covers. I love how ska bands are totally unashamed of filling half their set with covers - we got a few Skatalites songs, the Slickers Johnny Too Bad, some Desmond Dekker.
