Prince Buster is seldom regarded as a dub pioneer

Artist:
Album: Chi Chi Run
Track: Boop
(30)
being generally regarded as having his golden era during the ska/rocksteady era, but this cut from the incredibly rare "Chi Chi Run" LP released in 1972 might shatter a few preconceptions. It is in fact a dub of an incredibly well-known reggae standard - a huge chart hit in the UK, and a long-time stage favourite of the Specials during the Two-Tone years. If you can work out what it is during the first fifty seconds, you're doing incredibly well. SO.....WHAT TUNE IS ... MORE

And now a Prince Buster classic from about 1963-64

Artist:
Album: The Original Golden Oldies Vol. 1
Track:
(23)
This track was also a huge live favourite played by the Specials during the Two-Tone era round about 1979-80. Re: Ivylander's observations about the Prince's over-enunciating on his soul covers, this was clearly designed for the local audience, and as such his vocal is a tad more "relaxed"

Free music video of One Step Beyond (17)
In November last year I was privileged enough to see the grandfather of ska, Prince Buster, play ten minutes down the road from me. He's the guy who wrote One Step Beyond, Enjoy Yourself, Al Capone, Whine and Grine etc, made famous by two-tone covers. I love how ska bands are totally unashamed of filling half their set with covers - we got a few Skatalites songs, the Slickers Johnny Too Bad, some Desmond Dekker. The five piece horn section was great, though the sound leve... MORE

Blog post image preview 2nd post on the blue beat label, a division of melodisc records in the uk specialising in jamaican r&b & ska music. the record label became so popular in the sixties that the term ska was also known as bluebeat for a time and later it was used for only-uk ska bands. blue beat got the jamaican monopoly for jamaican music until the arrival of island records in 1962. prince buster was probably the greatest artist of that time. he got a deal with blue beat and most of his ja...
