Portugal. The Man! It was at Common Grounds in Gainesville last week. Very good stuff. I wasn't a huge fan before; I had the first CD, "Waiter: You Vultures!", but was never really that into it. The first thing that hit me when I walked in was the smell of cannibus, which is always a good sign :D But when the actual show started, I was converted. They were amazing. I was reminded of The Mars Volta's "Scabdates", P.TM must have had extended jams for each of the 8 or so song... MORE
So I'm just trying to get used to this site. I figured I'd just post the song that is getting the heaviest play from me at the moment. In my opinion, the album of the year so far has to be Church Mouth by Portugal. The Man. I realize their sound isn't exactly mainstream, but they can certainly grind. I do think that Gourley sounds like a girl though...
I got this CD in the mail today, and I'm rather enjoying it. In the same family with The White Stripes and The Black Keys but not an identical twin to either of 'em. The second track of the album, "Sugar Cinnamon", is the one that's stayed in my head. I couldn't resist the keys, the drum lines, or the layered vocals. Granted, I've only listened to the album twice through so my opinion is sure to change. But really, all of the songs are pretty engaging, despite being lyr... MORE
Admittedly I have a subscription to Alternative Press... Its ok, call me trendy, I dont mind. However I cant always trust their opinions (this is the same magazine that gave Gym Class Heroes a PERFECT rating, sigh). But I think they hit the nail on the head with "Portugal. The Man". These guys are pretty impressive, prog-pop (a la Chiodos, minus screaming) without being too terribly pretentious, longwinded, or overly intricate. Thus far, I've only downloaded a handful of...
