In the mid-1990s, the dreamy-but-grooving sound of trip-hop was confined to the U.K. underground until Portishead brought it to the worldwide mainstream. Combining electronics, lush production, Ennio Morricone-like guitar breaks, and angelic singing from frontwoman Beth Gibbons, the band became a leader of the trip-hop movement. Portishead split after its second album, and Gibbons eventually went the solo route with her critically lauded 2002 album OUT OF SEASON.

... will be on infinite loop in mind for a looooong time. This will be the music-based enduring memory from Coachella 2008, for me at least. Picture, if you will, burrowing your way to the second row of the main stage at Coachella, and witnessing a fantastic set by Kraftwerk. So here we are , its been too long since Portishead has toured or released their follow up to their second LP and last night I got the pleasure of seeing them live on my computer from Coachella; but man I wish I had been there! But here I am back also to MOG and not to the hail of critics and MOGGERS delightful screams of Hurrah - to a much lesser extent in fact but back none the less... Some ten years after their last formal release, trip-hop pioneers Portishead are releasing their fourth album, cleverly named Third, on April 14.
Its hard to explain just how BIG Portishead's Dummy was back in 94/5 in the UK. It seemed that almost every track from their début album was used on almost every TV trailer, and still people couldn't get enough....... MORE

Well, as things tend to go, someone has already seeded this. Oh, well.
Just to give you a further idea of the direction of Portishead's new album, "Third", I mogged about earlier, here's "We Carry On" (which was provisionally titled "Peaches" on the ATP set list.)
Talk about a departure.
Now, I just need to hold my breath until I manage to grab this on a juicy slab of vinyl.
