Portishead Biography

Source: Wikipedia

Portishead (IPA: ) is a trip hop band from Bristol, England, named after the small town of Portishead, 12 miles west of Bristol. With their use of live jazz samples and intentionally lo-fi sound, the band has been cited as influential by many modern musicians including underground producer Danger Mouse, Madonna, Nelly Furtado and videogame musician/producer Akira Yamaoka.

Beth Gibbons has an excellent, extraordinary voice. This does not mean "she sounds nice when she sings"; "she has the 'voice of an angel'", or "she'd do a mean aria". It means: she sings, and you listen. She sings, and she communicates. In my view, she has one of the most distinctive, affecting, expressive voices in modern music. (What a horrible phrase - "modern music".) Listening to her sing after any number of 'cool', 'trendy' vocalists, there really is (for me) ... MORE

... will be on infinite loop in mind for a looooong time. This will be the music-based enduring memory from Coachella 2008, for me at least. Picture, if you will, burrowing your way to the second row of the main stage at Coachella, and witnessing a fantastic set by Kraftwerk. Then, then stage is set for Portishead to arrive, which they do clad in black. Black would also well describe the hearts on their sleeves. The anguish in the songs is clear from the pained expr... How long has it been, 10 years since Portishead played a full live set in the US? According to a review on Fader Mag, the Portishead show in L.A. last week was very much an equipment test for their big Coachella appearance. Watching videos from the live show at the Mayan Theatre on April 24th, it would seem that this exact thing made the event way more intimate and friendly. Like watching Portishead practice in their basement for close friends. Beth Gibbons was sporting f... MORE

So here we are , its been too long since Portishead has toured or released their follow up to their second LP and last night I got the pleasure of seeing them live on my computer from Coachella; but man I wish I had been there! But here I am back also to MOG and not to the hail of critics and MOGGERS delightful screams of Hurrah - to a much lesser extent in fact but back none the less... So last night I did what everyone else hopefully not at Coa did and I plopp... MORE

Blog post image preview Portishead have succeeded! When you thought they couldn’t become any more dour than they were on their two previous albums, along comes their comeback, Third. It seems they have been listening to Nine Inch Nails and industrial rock which shows up as a harder edge in their new songs. But there is no question: this album is truly great. Portishead — multi-instrumentalist/producer Geoff Barrow, singer/writer Beth Gibbons and guitarist Adrian Utley — hit the scene... MORE

Here it comes. It's only been a decade. No biggie. I speak of Portishead's third album release cleverly entitled Third. Let's face it. Some of us get things a little earlier than we are supposed to. I received the advance of the album a little while back. I gave it a quick listen and decided it wasn't worth the decade wait. First off, it kind of scared the shit out of me. Third has the eerie tone that is found on previous Portishead releases... and then multi... MORE

As I mentioned last week, Portishead performed songs from their upcoming album live in the English town they got their name from. It aired live on tv in the UK and Current tv supposedly has the video available this week, but I can't seem to get it working. So, I found the vids on youtube... Here is the official Current TV web address if you'd like to try there first. Perhaps I can't see the video b/c I'm in the States:

Portishead fans will have a chance to listen to the band's upcoming album Third in its entirety a full week before it is released! Plus, it's totally free and legal. For the first time ever, Last.fm will stream a full album prior to release when it makes Third available on April 21st. I have to admit, I listened to the leaked version and it's amazing! But the leak was a lo-fi copy (obviously to encourage people to still get the album) so I am super excited to hear a prope... MORE
