Montreal's PLANTS AND ANIMALS have been on heavy rotation on the iPod for the past two weeks. I'm especially liking this track "Good Friend" off the album PARC AVENUE (fittingly released by Secretly Canadian). Apparently they created some nice buzz at SXSW. This track has a smooth Dire-Straits-ish guitar riff throughout and then Sarah Neufeld (of The Arcade Fire) caps it off with a dramatic violin conclusion. Few debuts are quote/unquote perfect. Plants and Animals' debut, _Parc Avenue_ is no exception. However, the fact that it's so damn enjoyable solidifies it as one of my favorite listening experiences of 2008 thus far. "Bye Bye Bye", the disc's rather unfortunately titled first track is, for me, the album's highlight. Okay I am now about to gush. I adore this song! I am in love with the idea that they are Canadian! I swoon over the name of this band.
But for the life of me I can't remember the name of those guitar-like instruments beloved by elementary school music teachers and Sunday school teachers the world over. The ones that are picked up and strummed with a pick, while pressing buttons. I swear I heard one of those in this song.

plants and animals, a trio of canadians whose first full length album, parc avenue, debuted earlier this spring, sound a bit like what you might expect from a fast-rising musical act out of montreal, only better. seriously. epic orchestration and rootsy songwriting, tight instrumentation, swells and surges and a puckish playfulness - basically we love it. and you will too.
