Jewish lesbian folksinger Phranc took the punk world by surprise when she released her militant folk record in 1985. A former punk rocker herself, Phranc set topical songs like "Noguchi" and "Everywhere I Go (I Hear the Go Go's)," the anti-suicide "Lifelover," and the sing-along "Female Mudwrestling" beside her strict cover of Dylan's "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" to great effect. Acoustic folk music had yet to be embraced by the punk/new wave underground, making Folksinger a watershed album.
