Maybe it was "Umbrella," one of those ubiquitous pop singles that filters beyond Top 40 into all corners of the culture. Tegan and Sara do a good version of it live. So I guess that makes it '07's "Crazy In Love" or "Crazy." What else could it be? Something by Arcade Fire or Kayne West? The lead track from Alicia Keys' album? Many months ago, I was introduced to a musician by the name of Petra Haden by way of a music podcast I frequently listen to. As it turns out, Petra is the daughter of jazz bassist, Charlie Haden, who is probably best known for his collaborations with jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny. I love covers, both strange & faithful. I have great affection for the rework that brings out subtle new shades of meaning in the original; I more often collect bizarre choices made by odd artists. You get the insanely great exclusive covers of "God Only Knows" and "Thriller" by the lady of the modern a capella one-woman-band, Petra Haden. When Petra's not singing The Who Sell Out and other formidable cover challenges all by herself (or in concert with a vocal ensemble), she's doing this: Also, found by going through Yuka Honda's page: the first new Sean Lennon song in 10 years, or so I believe ... and I haven't gotten it to load.
