This Father's Day is a reissue of critically acclaimed (and, as often, critically ignored) singer/songwriter Peter Himmelman. Dedicated to his late father, This Father's Day is a somber, personal album highlighted by the moving title track and the yearning "11:30 Pacific Time." The songwriting, as usual for Himmelman, is first-rate and the playing is solid as well even if a few tracks like "Eleventh Confession" sound a bit dated. Himmelman manages to create an intense, openhearted mood through his lyrics (sometimes so openhearted that the listener feels a bit too voyeuristic). This Father's Day will be of interest to Himmelman's fans, particularly for historical reasons, although for new listeners it might not be the best introduction to one of the better lyrical craftsmen of the '80s and '90s.
