Pearl Jam

Vitalogy

Thanks to its stripped-down, lean production, Vitalogy stands as Pearl Jam's most original and uncompromising album. While it isn't a concept album, Vitalogy sounds like one. Death and despair shroud the album, rendering even the explosive celebration of vinyl "Spin the Black Circle" somewhat muted. But that black cloud works to Pearl Jam's advantage, injecting a nervous tension to brittle rockers like "Last Exit" and "Not for You," and especially introspective allads like "Corduroy" and "Better Man." In between the straight ock numbers and the searching slow songs, Pearl Jam contribute their strangest music -- the mantrafunk of "Aye Davanita," the sub-Tom Waits accordion romp of "Bugs," and the chilling sonic collage "Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me." Pearl Jam are at their best when they're fighting, whether it's Ticketmaster, fame, or their own personal demons.

Blast from the Past: Pearl Jam's Vitalogy

Pearl Jam is one of those bands that people just love. Right from the release of their classic debut Ten people went ape shit for this band, and why wouldn't they? The songs are immediately powerful, loaded with emotion and darkness, and buoyed by the rawness of the overall sound of the band. Yet for some reason, as much as I enjoyed Ten and Vs, the band never really clicked with me until they

Back in the groove - Vinyl VS ...everything else

By Richard TomkinsFrom FT.comThe strangest thing about EMI’s former record factory in Hayes, west London, is not that it has been lying derelict for years, but that in a ramshackle outbuilding once occupied by the packing and shipping department, 11 of the 120 record presses that immortalised the music of groups such as The Beatles and Pink Floyd are again in full production, turning out single.

From Billboard.BizOn a humid Friday night in October, three 19-year-olds crowd into a small New York University dorm room to listen to music. The room is typical: battered posters of Joy Division and Harry Nilsson taped to the walls, an unmade bed, no signs of food save for a box of Life cereal. But the young men, all wearing skinny jeans and faded T-shirts, aren't listening to CDs or MP3s—inst.

Vinyl Comeback

A weird thing has happened on the way to the graveyard. The vinyl record–something that was declared dead by the early 90s, thanks to the CD–is making a very, very big comeback. Some people even believe that vinyl is about to re-enter the mainstream in a very big way. Why? Several reasons. First, vinyl has never died amongst several hardcore groups, including collectors and DJs. Second, vinyl

They chose Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam did more than just say yes.According to a representative from Harmonix: "Rock Band and Rhapsody are kicking off a new initiative. I have experienced arguably the worst week of my adult life because of the need of particular groups to protect themselves from potential liability rather than doing the "right thing".
