It isn't hard to make the case for Patti Smith as a punk rock progenitor based on her debut album, which anticipated the /p>

ew wave by a year or so: the simple, crudely played ock & roll, featuring Lenny Kaye's rudimentary guitar work, the anarchic spirit of Smith's vocals, and the emotional and imaginative nature of her lyrics -- all prefigure the coming movement as it evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. Smith is a ock critic's dream, a poet as steeped in '60s garage rock as she is in French Symbolism; "Land" carries on from the Doors' "The End," marking her as a successor to Jim Morrison, while the borrowed choruses of "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances" are more in tune with the era of sampling than they were in the '70s. Producer John Cale respected Smith's primitivism in a way that later producers did not, and the loose, improvisatory song structures worked with her free verse to create something like a new spoken word/musical art form: Horses was a hybrid, the sound of a post-Beat poet, as she put it, "dancing around to the simple ock & roll song."

I understand that she's a legend and all, but I really can't get into Patti Smith. I don't know why. I tried to listen to Horses again today, and it just didn't work for me. I can respect her contribution, but I guess at the same time I don't have to listen to it.

I said it once here, and I'll say it again, Patti Smith is THE QUEEN of every punk, indie, underground music scene to develop of the 60/70s retro-movement.....she was and still is a blinding light in a otherwise blur of mediocrity......I won't risk the ire of the MOG community by actually naming names, but suffice it to say that the unrepentant courage exhibited by Patti is sorely missed in tod...

Last week of a legend

Today starts the last week of existence for CBGB as we know it. Yes, they may be moving to Las Vegas but really...that doesn't matter and I don't know if anyone really cares except the Kristal family (and I wish them all of the best). A couple of weeks ago I was waiting to meet someone at the corner of Bond & Bowery outside of a cafe. As I was waiting, a half block from CBGB, I saw an old man w...

This has remained my favorite album since I bought it originally in 1976 . It is the closest album I have to what I consider perfection (spoilt slightly by free money). It is the only album I have bought on 3 occasions - twice on vinyl and once on CD. It starts by making the song 'Gloria' hers - any other version pales into insignificance by comparsion. It just gets better from there on in. ...

1. Patti Smith, "Gloria." There were some great albums in 1975 ... everyone knows how important Born to Run was to me, and there was Blood on the Tracks, and Physical Graffiti, and a zillion others. But I don't know that any of them had the same shock effect of hearing "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine."2. War, "Low Rider." Not many bands had as great a run in the early 70s than thi...

I'm jazzed for the final season of the Sopranos starting tonight, but then hearing some Patti Smith on the radio prompted me to recall the season finale of Millenium from about 10 years ago. The 2nd season of the show was way dark, mystifying and overall excellent. My wife and I were watching the season finale and this bit suddenly helps close it all. Apocalypse set to Patti Smith's Land: ...
