AMG Review of Tribute to Finn Otto Hansen
Scott Yanow
All Music GuidePapa Bue's Viking Jazz Band has been together for over a half-century. Led by trombonist Papa Bue Jensen, the group has been one of the top trad bands in Europe and their native Denmark for decades. The frontline heard on this CD, which consists of previously unreleased material, had been unchanged for a dozen years, so they were very familiar with each other's playing but they still sounded enthusiastic and lively. Although dedicated to trumpeter Finn Otto Hansen, who passed away in 2001, this CD does not feature him more extensively than on a normal session. Hansen is in the spotlight on "Roses of Picardy," clarinetist Jřrgen Svare is showcased on the medium-tempo lues "Down in Chicken Town," and trombonist Jensen as always plays particularly well in ensembles. Banjoist Bjarne "Liller" Peterson takes a few worthwhile vocals on the more traditional material. All in all, this is a fun date and a fine testament to the timeless and joyful music of Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band.
