I'm trying to remember when I saw Oumou Sangare at SOBs in New York. Mid-Eighties? My friend Robin said, "She's gotta be the Aretha of Africa." I am usually a little annoyed by those (person) of (placename) comparisons, but there may have been some justice in that one. She commanded a stage like few I've ever witnessed. It's three months since Oumou Sangaré was last posted

so here, without further ado, is a track from the Malian vocal queen, that doesn't appear to have been posted before; mind you, adding the correct accents to the title might screw up some searches - it's correctly translitterated as "Djôrôlen"The track really evokes the wide open spaces of the western Sahara, with a simple backing of guitar and flute. It's from 1996.
