AMG Review of Discoveries
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThis 1986 LP is filled with previously unreleased performances including alternate takes from Savoy sessions that featured bassist Oscar Pettiford. Actually, seven of the 14 numbers are from 1952 and find Pettiford playing some very effective cello while accompanied by a rhythm section including Charles Mingus on bass. In addition, Pettiford is heard in a couple of groups with accordionist Mat Mathews, trios with either Eddie Costa or Hank Jones on piano, and a jam session on "No Knox Blues" with tenorman Paul Quinichette. Hopefully, all of this enjoyable music (along with the master takes) will be reissued on CD.
