AMG Review of Otherside
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideAltoist Oliver Lake is heard in two very separate settings during this set. He is featured with pianist Geri Allen, guitarist Anthony Peterson, bassist Fred Hopkins, and drummer Andrew Cyrille on four free bop originals, but of greatest interest are two numbers cut with a passionate and star-filled big band, which includes 16 horns and a rhythm section. Among the key soloists are trombonist Frank Lacy, Mathieu Darriau on tenor and trumpeter Stanton Davis. The often ferocious ensembles are memorable, and the rendition of "Dedication to Dolphy" is particularly noteworthy. Fans of advanced jazz will want to get this underrated release.
