How one book, one concept, inspire a lifetime of muses, questions, and illusions.
Today I was listening to Velvet Underground's Venus in Furs....and as a writer, loved the contradictory nature of the title of the song and decided to look up its derivation.
I unraveled centuries of history- some dark, some romantic, all mysterious.
First reference of Venus In Furs was the book VENUS IN FURS by Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Published in 1870... MORE

I never understood why some artists choose such weird for their songs. Usually the ones that do happen to be good its just slightly harder for us music aficionados to remember.

I am so obsessed with Of Montreal's cover of this: which is M.I.A.'s cover of this: which is Parvati Khan from the movie Disco Dancer. Actually I'm obsessed with all of them. I want to listen to them all in a row, over and over. I wanted to play them all on my radio show today - instead I decided to calm down and just play the original. Next week, though, Of Montreal.... I'll admit it, I resisted these guys (ok, this guy) at first...but holy cow, this song is amazing...really curious about how this stuff comes off live...if you have a live version of this track in particular I would love to hear it. The internet loves this band. Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal from Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? ... MORE

Holy crap it's been a shit long time since I've posted/wanted to post anything at all. But this is just too damn awesome to pass up. I'm sure you know these crazy bastards. And their crazy awesomeness.
Well, the kindly folks over at You Ain't No Picasso, a pretty bad ass indie music blog, if you're into that sort of thing....
They've compiled a whole buttload of Of Montreal cover songs. And I mean...a whole buttload. Apparently he scoured the forums of the... MORE

There were a lot of good albums in 2007. And I mean a lot. I listened to as many as I could, but the sheer volume of good music that was released was at once overwhelming and heart warming. I was thrilled to be surrounded by all this artful sound, but also intimidated by the mass amounts.
In the end, I suppose it was a good thing.
But as I look back, there are about ten albums from 2007 that I feel particularly attached to. I listened to them the most, lov... MORE

Watch the recent Amsterdam gig of these Montreal Indie rockers!
Of Montreal is an American indie pop band from Florida, formed by frontman and glam rock icon Kevin Barnes. The band is named after Kevin's failed relationship in Montreal.
Of Montreal's debut album 'Cherry Peel' came out in 1997, followed by 'The Gay Parade' in 1998. 'Aldhils Arboretum' (2002) was the start of a change in their sound. It became much more danceable, structured and the use of elec... MORE

With all the fallout for Of Montreal's song "Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games" being used in an Outback Steakhouse commercial as well as a recent T-Mobile video shoot which featured the band, fans are learning that the group is making a effort to, well, cash in.
In a open letter to Stereogum.com, frontman Kevin Barnes has made an attempt to at least explain himself.
Are you a sell out? Yes. Don't let it bother you though, cause apparently I am also a s

I could go through the myriad reasons I hate this band including the two (!) times I have (unfortunately) seen this band and would rather have been walking naked through a glass factory before a dip in the ocean...but I will let their lame sell-out for a crappy cell phone company lead the way... http://idolator.com/tunes/it.s-only-selling-out-if-you-do-it-for-the-right-price/of-montreals-t+mobile-ad-cell-phone-companies-now-pandering-to-the-blog-demo-324328.php (loo...
