The Unbearable Charm of Aging: Nick Lowe @ The Fillmore

Nick Lowe, Robyn Hitchcock
(The Fillmore, San Francisco CA, 04/12/2008)

I want to age like Nick Lowe: with great dignity. When I'm closing in on 60, I want his relaxed charm, faint smile, easy humor, gaunt figure, and confident grace. From the way Lowe transmitted these qualities throughout his 90-minute down-to-mid-tempo set at The Fillmore last night, it's hard to say whether resignation to age or hard boozing along the way are part of the deal. What I can say is that, amo... MORE

Jesus of COOL

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(27)
2008 marks the 30th anniversary of Nick Lowe's seminal 1978 album Jesus of Cool. The album, released in the U.S. as Pure Pop for Now People, marks the beginning of one of the most storied and influential solo careers in pop music and marks the true emergence of a songwriting monolith. The album is a literal compendium of 25 years of pop music history. Here, the sweet melodies of pre-Beatles pop, the energy of the British Invasion, the excess of glam and elements of ska and... MORE

Back in print for the 30th anniversary of its original release, this 1978 solo debut still shows itself to be the greatest album in Lowe's catalog. Marking a glorious new phase in his career, Lowe had already made the transition from the pub rock of Brinsley Schwarz to the punkier and new wavier sounds of the artists he produced for Stiff Records. Lowe's songwriting had also started to show the twists and sparks that he'd bring to Stiff, as he recorded a pair of singles ai... MORE

I was listening to an echo, I was impressed....

Artist:
Album:

It's my theory that if you're reasonably preoccupied with music - in other words, if you're like practically everyone here - over the years you've developed your own idiosyncratic patterns for buying and listening to music. I used to buy one album (vinyl, then CD) every week or two, play it to death, then move on to the next one. Nowadays I find more pleasure in waiting a month or two, then devoting a good hour or two at a record store, emerging with a fistful of CDs that ... MORE

Few musicians can claim renegadery to pup rock and new wave- especially since I'm pretty sure I just made the word "renegadery" up. Fictional words aside, Nick Lowe is considered the bastardized grandfather of quite a few underground styles, which isn't surprising when you hear Jesus of Cool, his first solo album from 1978 which has just been re-released on Demon Records UK. I hadn't heard much of the guy's music when I got the album so I wasn't sure what to expect when I ... MORE

Nick Lowe's "Tonight"

Artist:
Album:

I keep getting e-mails from Yep Roc plugging Lowe's 30th anniversary release of "Jesus of Cool", so I relented - and spun the copy I already have. Great melody on this track from Lowe's 1978 pop-fest, shows the Dave Edmunds influence for certain.

It was nice to hear Nick Lowe on the radio the other day reminiscing and talking about his new album At My Age. He wrote "What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding" that was a hit for Elvis Costello. Nick also used to produce Elvis and others. His great tune "The Beast in Me" was made famous by being used in the first episode of The Sopranos.

Long Way FAQ!

(31)
A lot of people say to me, "Brendan! Long Way Back came out so long ago! When's the paperback coming?" Actually, nobody's said that to me, but if they did, I'd tell them that on Tuesday, January 29th, the long wait for the US paperback of Long Way Back will end at last. Below, some frequently asked questions: Q: Who's the hottie on the cover? A: I have no idea. I believe she's there to make the book look more female-friendly. Apparently the guitar on the hardback... I Am The Resurrection: The Return Of The Jesus Of Cool

Blog post image preview Nick Lowe speaks candidly to MOG "I didn't think anyone would be talking about this record come the end of 1978, let alone 2008," says Nick Lowe, of the 30th anniversary reissue of his debut solo album Jesus Of Cool, in the shops and on-line this coming February. Self-effacing as ever, he's still trying to find his feet after the blanket praise heaped on his 2007 release, At My Age, so the idea of his first forays into long-playing popdom still being worthy of discussion... Blog post image preview .okay... my first post... post-new-mog... I was supposed to help with testing the new MOG but I got absolutely creamed by work... (feeling really guilty about it...) ...but the place looks great!... now to take it for a test spin... Nick Lowe should be in everyone's record collection... he's the guy other musicians dig... Not only did he hold the door open for punk music, he's also given us a lot of great music over the years... My two favorite Nick Lowe stories... H... MORE

Blog post image preview So, next February sees the release of the 30th anniversary edition of Nick Lowe's debut album Jesus Of Cool. When first issued in the US back in 1978 it was under a different title, namely Pure Pop For Now People, the J-word being thought as too inflammatory in some parts of the country. I'm now trying to put together a list of other albums whose titles were altered in foreign territories. Things like Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen, which was changed in the US to Two Whee... MORE

Another Rockpile Member

(24)
Blog post image preview Nick Lowe was another member of the band Rockpile, it follows up with the post I just made on Dave Edmunds. This tune is my favorite Nick Lowe song I believe. Not really sure to be honest if it is an original or not, maybe someone else out there knows.
