'Tis a good month for your favorite friendly blogger/artist/entrepreneur. The tickets came in for those second row seats at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. In less than a month, I will be a few feet away from both Conor Oberst (for the first time) and Jenny Lewis (for the third time, but it'll feel like the first anyway). Some very good stuff there, I know. I'm also excited, oddly enough, about the writing journal my English professor assigned. Each entry is one page, sing... MORE
A few weeks ago my friend Gorm was visiting and spotted a couple of Nick Drake documentary DVDs on my shelf. I had been saving them for special occasions because I knew they would be emotionally challenging to watch and I would want to write about them (as this review bears witness to), and at the same time I hadn't really wanted to watch them for fear of disappointment - the usual syndrome that can hit the ardent fan when someone else dares to provide opinions on and anal... My girlfriend has just got off the phone to Orange, to arrange for her mobile phone to be fixed. The guy she spoke to apparently sounded "really pissed off", and I suspect I know why. I'm guessing that the dude in question had been called in to work on his day off to cover someone he knows for a fact spent the weekend taking pills at Creamfields. He's also fed up because all his mates think he's got the day off, and his phone keeps beeping as different friends are sendin... MORE

For a rainy, reflective tuesday afternoonThe album cover claims that the posthumously released Time Of No Reply contains “10 previously unreleased tracks, including 7 completely new songs, plus the 4 ‘last session’ tracks” that were recorded in 1974. Rather than being mere bottom of the barrel scrapings, this clearing of the vaults more often than not simply offers songs that Nick had recorded but chosen not to release during his brief recording career. The fact that some ... MORE
As this is the debut post on my new informal blog/notepad, A rare, rare find..., <http://rarerarefind.blogspot.com/> I should probably come clean about the title I have chosen for the blog. It is, as many will know, a quote from a song by late great songwriter, guitarist and singer, Nick Drake. More particularly it is a line from the song titled "Time has told me" which originally appeared on Drake's 1969 album, Five Leaves Left. I have a medium to severe Drake obsession, ... MORE
Billboard.com, MTV.com and Pitchfork are reporting about an eerie obsession Heath Ledger had with Nick Drake, the singer who died young in 1974. Nick Drake is well known to have suffered with depression and died of an overdose of anti-depressant medication. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003700068 Ledger directed a black and white video for the song "Black Eyed Dog" which played at the Bumbershoot Festival last year. http://w... I've just finished slowly treading my way through Nick Drake’s “Family Tree,” an album featuring recordings he made before 1969's “Five Leaves Left.” While its appeal is probably limited, I think it's worthwhile for those of us interested in hearing Drake's progression as a songwriter.
Be warned though, "Family Tree" is difficult to take in one sitting(28 tracks/bad sound quality), but ultimately it rewards perseverance with interesting covers(one with sister Gabrielle)... MORE
