AMG Review of New York Voices
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThe debut recording by the New York Voices is more impressive for the sound and talent of the group than for the material they perform. A somewhat commercial effort (all recent poppish songs other than "'Round Midnight" and "Caravan") given mundane arrangements, this set features the group at a time when they had five vocalists and were clearly hoping to sell a lot of records. One can hear the potential of the vocal ensemble come through, and thankfully most of the material heard on this set has been long discarded. This is a CD that is more intriguing on a historic rather than musical level.
